There are a lot of typos in the copy I read They just kept popping up Not sure if I read a budget copy that hadn t been proofread or what I wish there was background on howwhy she got to camp what her family is like how old she is how she knows Jan etc So many uestions The character development is pretty poor Beyond rough character sketches we never really find out much Lovely description of the Upper Peninsula region of Michigan Anyone who s ever felt the icy blue water of Lake Superior or smelled the spicy fragrance of Michigan pines will begin to feel nostalgic for those places I loved the author s understanding of Northern Michigan and her obvious appreciation of the beauty and wonder of nature This couldn t be just a lake No real water was ever blue like that A light breeze stirred the pin cherry tree beside the window ruffled the feathers of a fat sea gull promenading on the pink rocks below The breeze was full of evergreen spice Um m m m Jan sniffed There s no smell like it anywhere p 19 Jan took Phyllis s hand led her to the water s edge Superior stays forty degrees winter and summer You have to get used to it Getting in s like pouring hot preserves into a fruit jar If you re careful everything s hunky dory But if you try it all at once Whing The water was the coldest Phyllis had ever felt Ice cold rippled glass The sand bottom furrowed like the inside of a fish s mouth They were waist deep now their toes gripping the velvety ridges and still going deeper deeper p 20 There are many charming vignettes of camp life making fudge sailing corn pops water games mushroom hunting raspberry picking and a light hearted but intriguing little mystery thrown in One line near the end threw me a little big spoiler alert It s the greatest archaeological find of the century That was a little hard to believe but everything else was fairly probable and a lot of fun The tone and language is a bit archaic at times but I just think that adds to the charm A great summer read

I really enjoyed this vintage YA book set at a camp in the North Woods by Lake Superior Though the characters and storyline were lovely my favorite part of the book was just the setting in the cool forest by the lake I love all the outdoors scenes I just felt I was right there on the lakeshore feeling the cool clean air and wading in the bracingly cold water hearing the wind blow through the evergreens sleeping in the woodsy lodge with windows overlooking the shore I really want to go to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan now
